This course focuses on the components and the techniques of writing poetry. It centers on identifying and classifying key components such as lines, stanza, diction, meter, rhythm, rhyme, figures of speech (metaphor, assonance, alliteration, hyperbole, etc), theme, setting, tone, mood, and others. More importantly, the course offers practical guides in the art of writing the aforementioned elements. The aim is to excite the imagination of students toward discovering the creativity in them. At the end of the course, students are not only expected to be equipped with the skills of writing poetry, but they are also encouraged to produce their own piece of poetry.
Materials for this course consist of (1) poems that serve as illustrations which might be discussed in the class and (2) creative writing practical books.
