R.F. Kuang has become one of the major voices in contemporary literature. Drawing extensively from her own experiences in publishing and academia as well as from her Chinese-American heritage, the author is known for her clever stories that address socio-political issues. In this seminar, we will have an in-depth look into Kuang's oeuvre. We will read excerpts from her Poppy Wars trilogy and discuss her three more recent novels. Themes to address can be (but are not limited to): power dynamics in academia, gatekeeping, racism, queerness, guilt, quest narratives, trends in publishing, etc.
Excerpts from The Poppy Wars will be made availabe via Moodle, but please obtain your own copies of the following books:
- Babel
- Yellowface
