This seminar aims to introduce students to a suite of methods that are foundational to the analysis of spoken language. The course introduces an array of tools and skills, including the use of organizational frameworks, software, as well as corpus analytical and statistical methods. Through practical exercises and case studies, students will gain a better understanding of the methods and tools available in the modern language analyst’s toolkit.
By the end of this seminar, students will:
- be able to create, organize, navigate and responsibly store data (collections);
- be able to create and execute reproducible data pipelines for the testing of hypotheses and the formulation of research questions;
- be familiar with software used in the analysis of language, such as ELAN, Praat, and R;
- undertake novel analyses of language variables following principles of data stewardship and representative analysis;
- perform rudimentary (descriptive and inferential) statistical analysis;
- be able to transparently communicate their methods and analyses in writing.
