This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics, the study of the relationship between language and the social context in which it is used. We consider variation at all levels of language and study how such variation constructs and is constructed by identity and culture. The course explores the sociolinguistics of multilingualism, ethnicity and language contact. We will also investigate language attitudes and ideologies as well as some of the educational, political, and social repercussions of sociolinguistic facts. |
