The aim of this seminar is to examine what types of language practices emerge within popular cultural contexts. Therefore, we will explore a variety of global pop culture phenomena and popular registers. Particular attention will be paid to language usage in music and lyrics, as well as (TV) series and movies. This course adopts a hands-on approach and students will work with many different types of data.
By the end of this seminar, students will be able to
- explain linguistic approaches to popular culture;
- understand the role of language in contemporary popular cultural practices;
- develop skills for analyzing the use of language in a variety of popular registers;
- to plan and design suitable datasets to answer research questions related to language as it is used in popular culture.
