Bemerkung

This introduction to peace and conflict studies focuses on perspectives critical of power structures. The seminar begins by examining key concepts related to conflict, war, violence, peace, and security in order to establish a theoretical foundation.

In the second part of the seminar, we will explore feminist and postcolonial approaches to develop an intersectional gender perspective on conflict, war, and peace. Among other topics, we will address the following concepts: gender-based violence (GBV), gender-specific and racialized logics of war and conflict, the construction of (militarized) masculinities and femininities, and so forth. To grasp these concepts, we will work with images, videos and narratives stemming’s from newspaper articles and OI/NGOs/government reports, but also from social media posts and movies/TV series.

In the final part of the seminar, we will conduct a critical analysis of following topics: inter-state war, counterterrorism, and peace and post-conflict interventions. For each of these topics, we will examine a visual representation drawn from popular culture. In a group presentation, you will conduct a (war) film analysis with the help of feminist and postcolonial approaches to inquire about narratives and representations of war, conflict, and post-conflict intervention.

Important note:

No seminar will take place on Thursday, December 17, 2026. Instead, it will be replaced by bloc-seminar on January 7, 2027 from 10:15 until 13:45.
