Over the past three decades, Britain has seen a score of changes, not only politically, but also and especially in the social and cultural sphere. The course will investigate how these changes have been depicted in contemporary texts and media, analysing the portrayal of Britain both today and yesterday. We will discuss novels, short stories, music, movies and plays, thus creating a mind-map of sorts of the currents and developments within the British cultural sphere. Apart from the selected texts that can be found in the “Semesterapparat”, the required texts are:
Kureishi, Hanif. The Buddha of Suburbia. London: Faber and Faber, 1990
McEwan, Ian. Saturday. London: Vintage, 2006
Smith, Zadie, Ed. The Book of Other People. London: Penguin, 2007
Students are strongly advised to read at least one of the primary texts before the course begins. The course requirements are: regular attendance, active participation in class discussions and the completion of the work assignments (mandatory). |
