The course is divided into three parts: a) definitions, dimensions and trends of violent conflict, b) causes and dynamics of violent conflict and c) case studies. The first part introduces different types and aspects of contemporary violent conflicts. This entails a discussion of the changing nature of civil wars. In the second part, we will focus on the causes of conflict, its escalation and termination, while situating conflicts into their regional and global enviroment. In the last part of the lecture, these analytical concepts are applied to various case studies from different world regions.
The course combines regular meetings and e-learning parts. Students need to be willing to engage with the digital materials on their own. |
