A large number of German and European municipalities are now driving forward the digitization of administrative processes and infrastructure management. In many cases, digitization is also used as a central component of a transformation narrative of cities and municipalities. The seminar explores the question of how smart cities approaches address the interfaces to sustainable urban development and how existing digitization approaches contribute to achieving local sustainability goals. The seminar will deal with central key building blocks of smart cities, such as the European and national reference framework, the challenges for management and capacity building, the possibilities and approaches of citizen participation and social co-production. Moreover, the seminar will critically examine the link between digitization and sustainability.
