On July 10th, 2013, rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter stood on a small low platform in front of which a wooden bench had been positioned. For six hours Jay-Z then continuously rapped his song “Picasso Baby” in front of the who is who of the art-world who took turns on the bench at Manhattan’s Pace Gallery. The performance – heavily inspired by Marina Abramović’s iconic performance “the artist is present” – was filmed and turned into the music video “Picasso Baby (A Performance Art Film).” A PR stunt? A critique of the commercialization of art? Appropriation? And what is it exactly that constitutes a performance/ performance art?
In this seminar we will identify the central tenets of performance (art); we will look at its origins, landmark performances, and the subsequent emergence of performance studies as an academic discipline. The scope of the seminar will lead us contemporary forms of performances (that is, post-dramatic theatre and “artivism”) – from Marina Abramović to Beyoncé and Jay-Z. The seminar will also include of practical exercises. |
