In the digital age the notion of what a text is has become a lot broader and includes, e.g. multimodal texts with (moving) images and also hypertext arrangements. In order to be able to “read” these kinds of texts in a modern and globalized world, learners will need to develop a type of literacy that is more comprehensive than the literacy needed to decode the written word. Multiliteracies, among other things, refers to the ability to make sense of information from different types of media and from the multiplicity of discourses.
We will look at the various facets of multiliteracies, will draw connections to current curricula & guidelines and will make extensive use of samples from different types of media and discourses in order to discuss practical implications for language teaching. This will include hands-on, output-oriented phases in which students get the chance to make active use of the provided information.
Relevant literature will be made available via Moodle in the course of the semester. |
