This course offers an introduction to the intersection of clinical linguistics and pragmatics, focusing on neurocognitive disorders such as Dementia of the Alzheimer’s type that can impact communication in adulthood. While we will cover aspects of all language levels, our primary focus will be on the pragmatic perspective on changing linguistic abilities. Through exploring a range of topics such as Implicatures, Relevance Theory, Speech Act Theory, Politeness Theory, Reference, and Discourse Markers we will consider how these relate to Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type specifically. Students will engage with recent and original work in these areas, and will have the opportunity to work with data and analyze various types of utterances and their meanings, taking into account both pragmatic and clinical factors. |
