Learning from the News in Algorithmic Societies
This seminar will examine different processes operating when news are spread all over network technologies. News in the era of social media need to raise users‘ attention and are crafted in a very unique form. We will analyze what characterizes news shared through social media and how human beings process this news: Do people actively seek those news? Or do they merely stumble upon them? How much do they really learn from consuming „snack news“ through those platforms? And how can human beings deal with algorithms that seem to curate their news feed and, therefore, their „window to the world“? In this seminar, we will discuss these questions with individual presentations and debate components. The seminar will be in English.
