The topic of sex and marriage in the Middle Ages cannot be discussed without having a detailed look at the general disparagement of women prevalent in those days. In this seminar we will trace the widespread misogyny among clerics and other men of influence back to their ancient roots. Then we will focus on relevant biblical texts and the interpretation of the same by the church fathers. After having familiarised ourselves with these (con)texts we will turn our attention to the discussion of sex and marriage in literary texts, paying particular attention to the Wife of Bath’s Prologue from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. |
