In recent decades, the work of undocumented artists, performers, and writers based in the United States has gained national and international attention. Alan Pelaez Lopez (they/them) is one of the leading creators in what has developed into a counter movement to longstanding notions of autonomy and belonging connected to citizenship and human rights. This course explores the AfroIndigenous artist’s contributions to academia, graphic art, poetry and public discourses on issues such as the paradox of undocumentation, transnational Afro(-) and Indigenous marginalization, and Trans rights. Our discussion is centered on the US-Mexico context; however, we will also investigate the artist’s exploration of spaces in the Caribbean and Central and South America. While thematically unified, this class will help students sharpen their skills in the key competences of Reading (how to use secondary literature) and Inquiry & Analysis (how to analyze literary texts). |
