The lecture will discuss roles and functions of literary texts in political debates (for instance during the English Revolution, the French Revolution, or WWI), but it will also explore how contextualist readings of historical and present-day literary texts can help us understand contemporary political debates (e.g., about appropriate responses to climate change, campus culture and the US "culture wars", globalization, societal polarization and populism, or free speech and the limits of satire).
A reader containing an initial selection of texts will be made available to intending participants from early October onwards.
