Due to Harry Potter literature and reading have become popular again. In this seminar we will take a look of how literature and media can appeal at everybody’s imagination and fascination and foster intercultural understanding and content focused learning. Thus we will apply the CLIL-approach (Content and Language Integrated Learning) of teaching and learning that refers to the teaching of different subject areas, like biology (“Herbology” and “Care of Magical Creatures” in Harry Potter’s world), sports (“Quidditch”) and history in the target language English. On the one hand CLIL can offer the foreign reader a form of understanding of the way life of the country, its culture and social background. On the other hand, subject areas are suitable to foster students’ vocabulary and verbal skills within a more authentic and content-focused context h new content areas, which might be very motivating for students who are not interested in literature. |
