This seminar is part of a blended intensive program funded by ERASMUS. You will study with incoming students from Maynooth (Ireland) and Salzburg (Austria). Pertti Alasuutari (University of Tampere, Finland) will be a guest lecturer in this course. The language of the seminar is English.

Globalization is a heavily debated issue of our times, also the Social Sciences, and in particular Sociology, have invested a considerable amount of intellectual energy in order to describe and explain the societal dimension of this process. Is globalization leading to a more homogeneous and standardized social order, or is more heterogeneity a consequence? Are we witnessing the emergence of a world society with a proper economic, political, social and cultural order? The course will take up this sociological debate in order to present and discuss different theories that describe different aspects and dimensions of globalization, and explain related processes and their consequences. The course will deal with economic, political, and social aspects of globalization, but special emphasis will be placed on the political cultural dimension of globalization.
