Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s famous TED talk “The Danger of the Single Story” challenges us to re-think representations of diversity and the way we perceive people, identities and communities in cultural contexts – also in EFL education and in EFL classrooms. This course will address the inclusion of a broad understanding of diversity into teaching and learning about culture (Kulturdidaktik) as well as teaching and learning with literature (Literaturdidaktik). Against this background, the selection of diversity-oriented texts as well as the design of tasks that are sensitive to engaging with diverse identities move centre-stage. This seminar will also include a narrative and autobiographical approach that invites students to bring in their own experience of ‘single stories’ – and the numerous creative ways such ‘single stories’ can be countered with voice, visibility, and agency. Therefore, the course will combine receptive and productive ways of embracing literary texts, task design and individual narratives for teaching and learning English. Students participating in this seminar are expected to complete weekly readings and assignments and become engaged in developing student products as learning outcomes (e.g., a public poster display). |
