Drawing on established television studies, this seminar will approach American animated series as a unique genre capable of addressing complex cultural issues. After establishing an understanding of how the genre works, the course will be practically oriented towards watching, discussing, and critically analyzing an array of series and topics. Love, gender, religion, contemporary politics, and several other topics will be investigated. Though the course will focus on the television format, reading scholarship in the form of secondary texts will be a major component of class work. Students should therefore bring along a healthy interest in reading as well. In addition, students who sign up for this course should already have an extensive background in the topic through their viewing habits. Ideally this would include experience with shows ranging from The Simpson's, South Park, American Dad, and Rick & Morty to Bob's Burgers, Beavis and Butt-Head, Daria, Adventure Time, and Bluey (yes, this is Australian). |
