The seminar "Growing up in Europe and Asia: Socialization from a global perspective" will be given jointly by guest lecturer Xiaorong Gu (University of Suffolk, UK) and Jessica Schwittek (UDE). It will be held weekly on Wednesdays 12-14 from 10.4.-29.5.2024, followed by two Fridays with Xiaorong Gu as a block seminar, on 07.6.2024 and 14.6.2024, both 9am-5pm. The block sessions will be held in English and the readings worked on in the seminar will also be largely in English. In the weekly sessions we will speak German, but also on the basis of mostly English texts. We will maintain an “error-friendly” culture and there will always be opportunities for translation and assistance, so don’t hesitate to sign up, even if you are not “perfect” in English!
The seminar offers an examination of the conditions of growing up in differently structured societies and hence offer a global view on socialization processes. European and Asian countries will be considered as contrasting examples. The seminar is divided into a total of five thematic sections:
1) Theoretical concepts
2) Childhood and adolescence in Germany
3) Comparative perspectives on growing up in different countries
4) Growing up in Asian societies
5) Growing up in Asian-European transnational contexts
In preparation for the sessions, you will receive small work assignments (reading a text, listening to a podcast episode, independent small research, reflection task) and try out different techniques and formats of scientific work. |
