Course content: How to Appropriately Acquire and Analyze Data?

The seminar introduces the basics of empirical social research and respective study designs (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed) before options to gain access to a variety of data sources (official, media) and data analysis are presented and tested focusing on a concrete case study chosen by the students themselves. Through the completion of a content (qualitative) and/or descriptive (and inference) statistical (quantitative) analysis of government, academic and/or media sources, focused on an issue of contemporary social change, students will become acquainted with and learn to critically evaluate and interpret official and public sources useful for analyzing contemporary changes in Japanese society and social structure.
