What are postcolonial love stories? The term seems to be somewhat contradictory because postcolonialism is in the public realm of raising awareness for the socio-political, cultural and economic legacies of colonialism and imperialism, while love is usually defined as the strongest bond between humans and associated with intimacy and privacy. Nevertheless, both are often inextricably interwoven; be it as forbidden love and desire in Lewis Nkosi’s Mating Birds (1983) in apartheid South Africa or as lasting love encompassing globalization as in Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie’s Americanah (2013). In this course we will read and discuss the representations of love, desire and self-love in various texts. We will also analyze the socio-political dimension of love and romance. Students are expected to be avid readers. Please get a copy of Ama Ata Aidoo (ed.): African Love Stories. An Anthology, Oxfordshire: Ayebia Clark Publishing 2007. |
