From modernist queer novels and films of the new queer cinema movement to recent productions broadcast on Netflix and other streaming platforms, this seminar will explore and assess popular texts across various times and spaces. It will introduce key works and theories related to gender and sexuality, providing critical perspectives on queer scholarship and its intersections with other variables such as race, ethnicity, age, class, and embodiment. We will examine the queer content of texts and the identity politics they embody, considering both their original contexts and their reinterpretations. In this light, we will discuss broader ideologies, including the role of genres, nostalgia and its potential limitations in decoding texts of the past, issues of authorship, and the interplay between moral and aesthetic values in texts during an era of hyper-politics. All materials will be supplied electronically, with some case studies to be agreed upon over the course of the seminar. |
