This lecture course will provide students with a sound introduction to the genre of travel writing. Beginning with the emergence of the genre in the Early Modern Age, the lecture course will provide an introduction to the history and literature of (Western) exploration, conquest and travel from the 16th century to the present day. It will familiarise students with instructions for travellers, and with a number of significant travellers and travel reports covering a wide range of locations, including the Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia. |
