This class will use a variety of formats – including (guest) lectures from partners in the AURORA University Alliance, directed student research, and (time permitting) field work – to examine past and contemporary visions and examples of sustainable cities. After discussing the concepts of “sustainability” and “(sub)urbanity,” we will analyze a variety of case studies in both North America and Europe, including the idea of the “Garden City” - realized here in Essen in the shape of the Margarethenhöhe - and Val d’Europe, a “new town” close to Paris and based on a unique partnership between the French state and the Walt Disney Company.
This class will allow students to improve their Information Literacy, Analysis, Written Communication, and Intercultural Knowledge competences. |
