Discourse is language above the sentence level. The field of discourse analysis looks for patterns (structure, organization) in units which are larger or more extended than one sentence. In this course we will consider the ways speakers build and hearers understand linguistic structure in texts of various lengths. Starting from considerations about the type of transcription, we will explore the emergent organisation of conversation and the way in which we structure language in different genres / media. Phenomena we consider are narratives, information structure and forms of reference, discourse markers, and interactional frames. |
