This lecture offers an introduction to the study of language. After introducing some general definitions, the basic properties of language and established approaches to the subject, the lecture discusses the different levels of the English language. It starts out from a description of its sounds (phonetics, phonology), then moves on to an investigation of the structure and meaning of words (morphology, semantics), looks at how words are combined into sentences (syntax) and, finally, at how language is used in actual speech situations (pragmatics). Please note that the lecture is only one part of the “Introduction to Linguistics I”. It is complemented by our linguistics tutorials (“Übungen”). Students participating in the lecture are expected to also take part in one of the tutorial groups. |
