Queer linguistics is a growing subdiscipline of sociolinguistics that investigates connections between language, gender, and sexuality. Starting from a historical perspective of how the field developed, we will explore contemporary studies and discourses centering around the topics of gender and sexuality. We do not simply focus on “the way men and women speak” but consider the social construction and norms of our shared social world, critically discuss how researchers are studying the language use of marginalized communities, and regard how queer people use language creatively to index a wealth of different gender and sexual identities. |
