Moral sentimentalists hold that emotions play centrally important roles in morality. Different versions of moral sentimentalism disagree on how these roles are best understood. Some moral sentimentalists hold that emotions primarily play an epistemic role, affording us our primary mode of access to moral knowledge or understanding. Other moral sentimentalists hold that moral properties or facts somehow essentially depend on emotional responses. This course will introduce students to, and help them critically evaluate, the main versions of moral sentimentalism, with a special focus on contemporary work on moral sentimentalism.
