Research on Japanese Social Institutional Change: Conducting qualitative research in contemporary Japan and beyond
This module consists of TWO parts, and this course is the SECOND part (every Thursday). This part prepares students to think about designing a research project/ BA or MA thesis, with a focus on qualitative research. The course provides information on various academic and government resources, some qualitative research methods and how to design a research project/ thesis. Students will learn how to collect (qualitative) data, critically analyse it and reflect on designing own research (project/ thesis) on contemporary Japan or other East Asian contexts. As the course will use some governmental media resources especially in Japanese, students are encouraged to have some knowledge of Japanese, but students working on other East Asian contexts are more than welcome to join.
Japanese language skills are not required - students with different country focus or limited japanese skills will receive different assignments if appropriate.
Details will be announced to registered students.
Active participation in each session and preparation for the course (e.g. reading assignments) are mandatory for this course. Students have to attend TWO parts (two sessions per week) to receive credits for this module.
