Institutions and Organizations in Japan: (Un)changing work and employment in contemporary Japan

This module consists of TWO parts, and this course is the FIRST part (every Wednesday). This part focuses on issues of (un)changing work and employment issues in contemporary Japan. Due to a graying population, the country is exposed to a serious labour shortage. The government and business actors seek to fill this gap through automation, employment of women, seniors and migrants and accelerated deregulation of irregular employment etc. The course introduces various issues of work and employment in contemporary Japan. Based on this theme, students will learn how to read, think critically and analyse academic journal articles. The focus of this course will be on Japan, but students working on other East Asian country contexts are more than welcome to join.

Details will be announced to registered students.

Active participation in each session and preparation for the course (e.g. reading assignments) is mandatory for this course. Students have to attend TWO parts (two sessions per week) to receive credits for this module.
