In this seminar we will concern ourselves with ancient critical theory and the influence it had on the Renaissance, the 18thcentury and beyond. The following texts will stand in the centre of our discussion: Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Poetics, Horace's Art of Poetry, Philip Sidney's An Apology for Poetry and Alexander Pope's Essay on Criticism. A reader containing primary and secondary texts will be made available at the beginning of the semester. |
