Who has the most passionate fans in the world? Precisely because there is (arguably) no single answer to this question, it inevitably leads to passionate debates—especially between rival fandoms! This seminar presents an overview of the field of fan studies, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of various phenomena of fandom. Our goal is to explore significant consumer and participatory practices as they relate to fans and their passionate engagement with the object of their affection/obsession. Along the way, students will engage in discussions of fan communities across literature, movies, music, and sports.
