The 1950's, with their images of post-war suburban prosperity and a simpler life, are a decade often dismissed as complacent and boring, hidden by the shadows of the momentous decades of the 40's and 60's. Yet the 50's are more complex than they appear to be at first glance. The Cold War and accompanying arms race, the desegregation of schools and the establishment of the civil rights movement, the rise of the Beat poets and the rock 'n' roll generation are just some of the events that show the 50's to be a time that was much more exciting and important than many may think. The aim of this course is to provide students with an introduction to some of the main events, trends and ideas of the 1950’s in America, and to show the relevance of the 1950’s within the historical context of the 20th century. |
