Although it is customary to think of young children as the audience for whom picturebooks were created, this assumption is misguided in that it fails to acknowledge the complexity and the potential of this art form.
Taking Re-thinking Picturebooks for Intermediate Learners: Perspectives for Secondary English Language Education (Alter & Merse, 2023) as a starting point, this seminar explores the role picturebooks can play in secondary English language teaching, focusing on how text and pictures interact to create meaning and on how this interaction can be made fruitful for language teaching. Drawing on the extensive picturebook collection of the EFL Education Department (https://www.unidue.de/anglistik/applied_linguistics_didactics/picturebook_collection.php), students will discover and discuss picturebooks on topical issues and learn about visual and critical literacy. By planning, carrying out and reflecting on micro-teaching sessions on picturebooks, they will then apply and deepen their newly-gained competences. |
