In the course of the last two decades the graphic novel has developed to an important literary genre which cannot be simply ignored anymore as cheap entertainment. Graphic novels appear in best seller list side by side with traditional prose texts. In this seminar we will analyse some of the major recent graphic novels concentrating on the narratology of stories told in a combination of words and pictures. Texts will include novels by Gilbert and Jamie Hernandez, Jeff Smith, Graig Thompson, Adrian Tomine, Jason Lutes, Will Eisner, David Mazzucchelli, Richard McGuire, and others.A reader with relevant material will be available at the beginning of the semester. Students are kindly asked to bring a laptop computer or a flash drive to the sessions. |
