In this course we will analyse a selection of well-known children’s books from a linguistic perspective, including The very hungry caterpillar and the famous Dr Seuss. Together we will dive into the language used to understand how these books tally with human language acquisition, how they combine language with other semiotic means like pictures, and what it is in their linguistic make-up that has made them so popular. Students will learn to apply the linguistic knowledge obtained in previous courses to books read and loved by children and entire families, seeing the literary products through a new lens.
To prepare: Get some children’s books that you know and love, and start thinking about what happens in them linguistically. |
