This course is an overview of three major research method traditions in language attitudes studies. We will begin with the earliest studies into the conceptual make-up of attitudes, and the challenges in direct elicitation methods which led to the popularization of indirect elicitation methods. We then turn to larger-scale attitudinal research methodologies, before investigating the distinction in scale between language attitudes and language ideologies. By the conclusion of the course, students will have a well-rounded understanding not only of methods in language attitudes research, but the historical development of such methods. |
