1922 is a crucial year not only in British literary history: With the publication of both Joyce's Ulysses and Eliot's The Waste Land, but also of Woolf's Jacob's Room, it has been called the "Annus Mirabilis" of Modernism. However, 1922 also saw the publication of a further volume of Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu as well as the publication of its first volume in English translation. Moreover, 1922 was the year in which Rilke completed the Duino Elegies. But it was also an eventful year in drama, music and the visual arts. In this seminar, while we will focus on Ulysses and The Waste Land, we will, depending on the interests of participants, also discuss texts from German and French literature as well as possibly music and the visual arts of the period. Students are required to purchase the Penguin Modern Classics edition of Ulysses ed. by Seamus Deane with an introduction by Declan Kiberd. A reader with an initial selection of further texts will be made available electronically in early April. |
