The goal of this course is to give students a broad introduction to the manifold aspects of American Civilization, both past and present. By taking a critical look at a wide array of materials (i.e. film, television, texts and music) we shall attempt to understand and analyze key cultural concepts and their development, such as "The American Dream", "The Melting Pot" and "Manifest Destiny". We shall also survey more general concepts, such as religion, politics, and regional geography. Though some aspects will be examined in great detail, the majority will only be touched upon in a cursory manner in order to ensure that students have a more complete overview of American Civilization. |
