Racism continues to shape society, influencing both individual perceptions and institutional structures. In response, antiracist pedagogy is increasingly considered in English language didactics as it aims to challenge racism in and beyond the classroom and enables teachers and students to critically reflect on their own actions and positionalities in society.
Against this background, the seminar will focus on this approach, which has not yet been implemented in the curricula. To do so, we will first discuss the history of racism and its impact on today’s society and ELT, followed by an introduction to antiracist pedagogy and an application of its key principles. In the second part of the seminar, we will take a closer look at how antiracist pedagogy can be implemented in ELT with a particular focus on cultural learning (Kulturdidaktik) and learning with literature (Literaturdidaktik). In the final part of the seminar, we will design tasks aimed at fostering main objectives of antiracist pedagogy.
Students participating in this seminar are expected to complete weekly readings and assignments. They are also required to take an oral exam after completing the module FD 2. |
