This seminar is dedicated to the multi-layered relationships between linguistic/semiotic practices, physical symbolism, spatial visibility and social change. The focus is on contemporary transformation processes in areas of conflict or tension. This includes the analysis of visual and semiotic elements during processes of migration, digital transformation, body modification (e.g. tattoos), the representation of de- and post-industrial processes in urban linguistic landscapes as well as the commodification and “bijouification” of symbols of coal and heavy industry. We will draw on theoretical approaches from sociolinguistics, semiotics, gender studies and linguistic landscape research. The seminar combines theoretical work with hands-on data collection and analysis: Students will analyze linguistic practices (oral, written, digital) in specific scapes (restaurant menus, graffitis, stickers, etc.), devote themselves to selectedlinguistic landscapes or document and examine forms of body modification. The aim is to reflect on how social, institutional and individual transformation processes are expressed in linguistic and other semiotic practices and (de-)constructed, be it in public urban spaces, on the skin, in online posts or in personal narratives. |
