We praise people for morally good deeds, skilled artistic performances, and virtuous character traits. But what is praise, and what does it take for someone to be praiseworthy? Can praise be morally bad, and if so under what conditions? What is the relation between praise (and praiseworthiness) and blame (and blameworthiness)? These are some of the questions we will address in this course. Topics to be covered may include: theories of the nature of praise and the conditions under which agents are praiseworthy; whether there are important asymmetries between praise and blame; and the nature and appropriateness conditions of the emotions involved in praise, such as admiration, pride, and gratitude. |
