When Kipling with his poem on the “White Man’s Burden” made the world aware of how much worse colonialism supposedly was for the colonisers than for those who had to serve them, the British Empire was at its height. Queen Victoria ruled over huge parts of the world and the British public was convinced that British colonialism was good for them, and the rest of the world. This was not, however, always true. We will have a look at the British “Imperial Project” through novels of the time, and how storytelling helped in shaping the colonial world. We will special attention to the technique of “othering” and will discuss famous stereotypes, such as the noble savage, the wild cannibal and the lascivious harem wife. A reader will be made available in the first session. |
