This module is focusing on the environmental impact of chemical industry and research. This impact is discussed and related to the so-called “Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry”. The question raised here is: What can we change in established methods to be more “green”? Applying the Green Metrics, we will conduct case studies to measure and evaluate the “greenness” of different chemical reactions. After knowing the fundamentals of Green Chemistry, we will discuss about alternatives to the established synthesis procedures. This involves alternative green solvents, novel synthesis concepts such as mechanochemistry, the usage of renewable resources as platform chemicals all the way to multi-purpose products.

This course aims to sensitize its participants to analyse chemical processes holistically. Therefore, we will introduce the concept of life cycle assessment. Alongside this, several methods are presented to reduce the amount of experiments, and thus the general waste production - tools which can be implemented easily during master/doctoral theses.
