Race, up to this day, is a very controversial subject. Invented as a biological term to justify categorising peoples into an imperial hierarchy, there since have been attempts to rehabilitate the word and turn it into a descriptive, rather than a normative term. In this seminar, we will have a look at the history of race and racism. We will then examine Victorian novels and see, if and how they incorporate racism into plot lines. Literature and a list of novels will be made available at the beginning of the semester in the moodle course. |
