In a globalized economy, global governance problems have become increasingly important. One of the central moral problems that arises in this context concerns the protection of human rights and compliance with environmental standards across international supply chains. In many parts of the global marketplace, there prevail certain standard threats to human rights, like forced labor, child labor, unhealthy working conditions etc. And although such threats are well understood both by governments and by the most powerful actors in the supply chain – such as multinational companies – it remains controversial what such companies ought to do to improve the protection of human rights and in this way fill existing governance gaps. It is against this backdrop that we will read seminal texts of the ongoing business ethical debate on the type and scope of corporate responsibility and apply them critically to current business practices in the global marketplace. |
