Bemerkung

The module contains the parts (1) Recent Developments of Korean Society and Politics (seminar) and (2) Project Study: Issues of Contemporary Society and Politics in Korea (project study).

Module topic: Civil Society, Social Movements, and the State in South Korea

In this course, we will explore a variety of developments and characteristics of contemporary Korean civil society and social movements in relation to the state. In its evolution from a colony to a divided nation, Korea has experienced abrupt changes in government, violent political upheavals, brutal war, and compressed economic development, all within the span of half a century. Such a compressed journey toward modernization and democratization has inevitably left cracks and fissures that have shaped the role, development, and characteristics of civil society and social movements. By examining a different topic each week, the course aims to introduce students to a variety of issues that are currently prevalent in Korean civil society. By examining these continuities and changes, students will be encouraged to formulate critical, balanced, and comparative perspectives on contemporary issues in Korea related to civil society, social movements, and the state.

Important note

You must register for 3 SWS if you wish to earn all 6 ECTS. Special arrangements can be made for non-IN-EAST students. The course takes place on two days per week. Please check the class schedule carefully.

Assessment and Evaluation
The course is assessed through class participation, including a one-time oral presentation, and a term paper (required length is 6,500 words plus any graphs, tables, etc.).
