In this course we'll be looking at the full circle of language processes to be found in individuals: those in which linguistic knowledge can develop and grow, but also others in which it may decline or even "be lost" (gradually or suddenly). The topics include FLA (first language acquisition as children) and SLA (second language acquisition through instruction in schools or naturally), but also language attrition / loss. We'll further be talking about language maintenance, i.e. what individuals can do to preserve different types of linguistic knowledge once acquired. |
